Fat Albert Rotunda is keyboardist Herbie Hancock's introduction to jazz-funk. The album revolves around the music Hancock wrote for the cartoon series Fat Albert. It is one of the records released between his 1965 breakthrough album Maiden Voyage and his 1973 classic album Head Hunters. Fat Albert Rotunda is a unique album in Herbie Hancock's long and varied output, with funky songs like Fat Mama and modern, jazz-oriented songs like Tell Me A Bedtime Story. The sextet accompanying Hancock features some of the most prominent musicians of the era, including Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet and Buster Williams on bass. Herbie Hancock is one of the most prolific jazz pianists of the 20th century. He played with such greats as Donald Byrd and Miles Davis. He has his own distinctive style, which he always dynamizes with variations between electronic and acoustic sounds. His work is essentially characterized by a great fidelity to style. Thus, he has supported almost every development in R & B, funk and jazz, while remaining original and unmistakable.
