In the 1970s, Herbie's "Crossings" was an indispensable "disc" on IKEA shelves with records by the student faction of jazz fusion. The psychedelic-tinged cover art contributed in no small part to this - though it was unclear where this transition would take us... However, the excellent trumpeter Eddie Henderson - often underrated as an improviser and composer - and Benny Maupin, who like Herbie Hancock grew up in the Miles Davis stable, offered a wide range of many sound-making instruments - as was the fashion at the time. The synthesizer and the Mellotron (equipped with ribbons, the Mellotron being something of an archetype of the sampler) were regulars in the group - and even produced melodic arcs here! Whether Bennie Maupin's "Quasar" transported the band and us to alien territory, as one review claimed, can be left open. In any case, the LP is a document of its time and doesn't sound dated - which is why younger contemporaries should find a fondness in these experiments of the last millennium. This Speakers Corner production was produced 100% purely analogue using analogue tape and mastering. All licenses and GEMA fees have been paid.
