The album "American Idiot" undoubtedly belongs in any decent music collection. Musically it has everything that makes punk punk, serious songs ("Wake Me Up When September Ends", "Blvrd Of Broken Dreams"...), typical funpunk ("American Idiot", "St. Jimmy", "Letterbomb", "Holiday") balladic ("Are We The Waiting", "Give Me Novacaine"...) and anthems ("Jesus Of Surburbia", "Homecoming"). Nothing to complain about, every song is a hit! Review "Green Day have never cared about conventions, not even their own. First they gave punk back to the next generation of young people, only to "betray" it to pop. And now this: "American Idiot" has become a concept album, almost a rock opera. Like "Quadrophenia" (The Who, 1973), it's about growing up in a world not worth living in, about rebellion and friendship, about violence and the death of all illusions. Just swap the idyllic Brighton bathhouses of the 1960s for the green hell of American suburbia, and quasi-romantic stabbings for the violence of today's street gangs. The trio here celebrate not only the resurrection of a genre, but also a very private reconciliation of punk and pop. And with "Jesus of Suburbia," Green Day has succeeded in creating their definitive masterpiece. Nine minutes and seven seconds - even that's new in punk!"
