Minutes to Midnight was the band's first album to feature drummer Rob Bourdon and turntablist Joe Hahn. The album title Minutes to Midnight refers to the hours of the doomsday. The clock is a symbol representing the threat of global nuclear war and is displayed on the wall of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists office in Chicago, Illinois. Minutes to Midnight has received mixed reviews from music critics. Some praised the album for its departure from the band's earlier nu-metal sound, while others criticized it for being too experimental. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one in the United States and Canada and selling over 625,000 copies in its first week. It was also the band's first album to go platinum in the United States. The album's lead single, "What I've Done", was released on April 2, 2007. "Do tohoto alba jsme vložili víc než do kteréhokoli předchozího," vysvětluje baskytarista Dave "Phoenix" Farrell. Kapela se tentokrát stáhla do studia na více než 14 měsíců a vybírala materiál z více než 100 demosnímků, které LINKIN PARK nahráli v rámci příprav na album. Mike Shinoda popisuje Minutes to Midnight jako "průlom ve vývoji zvuku kapely. Vyzkoušeli jsme nové způsoby psaní a použili nástroje a vybavení, se kterými jsme nikdy předtím neexperimentovali. Zpochybňovali jsme každý krok, který jsme udělali." Rick Rubin to potvrzuje: "Opravdu se znovu objevili, už to nezní jako rap-rock. Album má velmi silné písničkářství a je velmi melodické.... progresivní album!" Nejenže album mělo úspěch, ale i následné turné po celém světě potěšilo nejen staré fanoušky Linkin Park.
