Produced by Terry Night, "Closer To Home" is the third studio album by GRAND FUNK RAILROAD and was originally released in 1970. The album was certified gold that year, marking the third (!) gold album for the band that year. The inner sleeve of the album features a live photograph of the band on stage at Madison Square Garden in 1970. "Closer To Home" was the record that gave GRAND FUNK RAILROAD the commercial success that masters like LED ZEPPELIN and BLACK SABBATH had long deserved. Rather than diving headfirst into the typical hard, almost overly loud sound, the band concentrated on good production here. This is quite evident in the strings in the acoustic opening of "Sins A Good Man's Brother" as well as the relatively quiet "Mean Mistreater". However, the gentlemen were far from wrapping themselves in cotton wool. Most of "Closer To Home" is as rocking as their previous albums.
