ENNIO MORRICONE, born on 10 November 1928 in Trastevere, Rome, is one of the greatest and most successful film music composers and conductors. He has also worked under the pseudonyms Dan Savio and Leo Nichols and has composed music for more than 500 films. His name is often associated with the Italian-Western film genre, but he has written music for only thirty such films. MORRICONE studied trumpet and choral music at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory with Goffredo Petrassi. In 1964 he began a successful collaboration with Sergio Leone and Bernardo Bertolucci. During this time he wrote music for Leone's films "For a Fistful of Dollars", "That Time in America" and "Play Me a Song of Death", among others. Since then he has composed music for approximately 15 films a year. MORRICONE became famous because many films, such as "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod", became cult films with his music. In 1987 and 2000 he won Golden Globe Awards for his film scores for the films "The Mission" and "The Legend of the Ocean Pianist", and in 1987 he won a Grammy for "Die Unbestechlichen".On 18 November 2003 MORRICONE was appointed Honorary Senator of the University of Music in Munich. On 25 February 2007, ENNIO MORRICONE was awarded an honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievement, for he has shaped the history of film melodies like few others, but has always come up empty in the five previous Oscar nominations.
