"The King" is one of the most important and, above all, most successful representatives of rock and pop culture of the 20th century: in a career that lasted just over twenty years, Elvis Aaron Presley sold approximately one billion records. Presley, who died in 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee, had been nominated for a Grammy Award fourteen times by 1978, which he won three times for his gospel performances. On the U.S. Billboard chart, "King" reached number one with 15 albums and 16 extended plays through 1977. He is the only musician in the history of the U.S. charts to top Billboard's Pop (18), Country (11), Rhythm & Blues (6) and Adult Contemporary (7) charts. Presley still to this day tops Billboard's list of the 500 most successful artists since 1955.
