In 1973, Elton John managed to break through with his breakthrough album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Now the remastered version is out on CD. From this album came a true superstar. Although Elton John was already well known in 1973 thanks to the growing success of his previous albums such as "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player", "Elton John" and "Honky Chateau", it was only after the release of the double album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" that he really became a household name. The album combines all the elements of Elton John's music: timeless songwriting, glam, R&B, gospel, soul, impressive musicianship and considerable qualities as an entertainer. It has gone on to sell 31 million copies. The album stayed at number one for eight weeks and went seven times platinum in the US. The track list also includes the most successful song from the pen of Elton John and his writing partner Bernie Taupin: "Candle In The Wind". The song became a worldwide hit three times, in three different versions and in three consecutive decades, and eventually became the best-selling single of all time. The album also features explosive classics such as "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and "Bennie And The Jets"; Elton John owes his status as the first white artist to appear on the influential American television show Soul Train. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album among the 100 greatest albums of all time. In a career that has consisted almost entirely of highlights, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" stands out as one of the high points of one of the most interesting dots in rock history. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is considered the pinnacle of Elton John and Bernie Taupin's creative and commercial success. It was the eighth studio album the two released in three years. However, the recording process did not go entirely smoothly: the original plan to use a studio in Kingston, Jamaica had to be postponed because the studio went on strike and a World Boxing Championships match threw the city into further chaos. So Elton and his band returned to the familiar surroundings of the Chateau d'Herouville. The album was completely recorded and mixed in 17 days, and the result sounds hugely ambitious - starting with the grand progressive rock of "Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding", moving on to pop, hard rock, soul and indescribably emotional ballads. The cover was a huge step forward for Elton John creatively as well: on previous albums the artist was either not depicted at all or as a brooding songwriter, but on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road you see him in full glory with his glittery platform shoes, satin jacket and of course his now legendary extravagant sunglasses. In the picture, he leaves the ordinary grey road and enters the magical world of fantasy that became not only a symbol of his artistic development, but also a symbol of rock music in the early 70s. The legacy of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is still alive and well and is reflected in a number of young bands and musicians who like to highlight the influence of this album on their careers.
