1987's Music for the Masses was Depeche Mode's sixth studio album and their first album produced by Dave Bascombe. On this album, the band departed from the synthpop sound of their previous albums and added a harder rock edge. The album spawned four singles, "Personal Jesus", "Enjoy the Silence", "Policy of Truth" and "World in My Eyes". "Personal Jesus" became the album's biggest hit, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the US Dance Club Songs chart. The album Music for the Masses was certified platinum by the RIAA and was named one of the best albums of all time by publications such as Rolling Stone and NME.
