The most significant aspect of this album, first released under the title Chet - "The Lyrical Trumpet of Chet Baker", is the interplay between Chet Baker and Bill Evans, two perennial jazz stars who rarely recorded together. At the time of this album, Chet was known for both his singing and trumpet playing. This LP, however, is entirely instrumental and features nine ballads in styles ranging from hard bop to cool jazz. Miles Davis' regular band at the time included a rhythm section consisting of Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. All Music Guide magazine critic Dave Nathan rated the album four stars, stating that "Baker's particular brand of horn playing is well heard on this album, and is made even more appealing by the presence and contributions of top jazz artists."
