Heartwork is the fourth studio album by English extreme metal band Carcass.It was released on 12 October 1993 by Earache Records and was the band's last album before their first break-up in 1995. The album was produced by Colin Richardson and the artwork was designed by Jeff Walker and Glen Benton. On Heartwork, the band departed from the grindcore sound of their earlier work and incorporated more melodic death metal elements, with some critics describing the album as progressive metal. The album has been hailed as a major influence on the death metal genre. Heartwork was received positively by music critics, many of whom praised the album's more melodic approach. In 1994, it was nominated for a Kerrang! Award for Best Album. The album was also commercially successful, reaching number 68 in the UK Albums Chart. The album's title track was released as a single in 1993 and reached number 26 on the UK Singles Chart. A music video was also released for the song. Heartwork is considered by many to be Carcass' finest hour and is often cited as one of the most important death metal albums of all time.
