The album is a rock opera and tells the story of Rosenkreutz's journey to the East and his discovery of the philosopher's stone. The album is Dickinson's most ambitious project to date and is a departure from his usual style of heavy metal. "The Chemical Wedding" is a dark and atmospheric album with elements of progressive rock and classical music. The album was well received by critics and was a commercial success.
