Blakey v Moers?? In MOERS???? "Along Came Betty" and "I Can't Get Started" amidst freely improvised music? After 1976, American drummer Art Blakey and his band Jazz Messengers, whose style was hard bop developed in the 1950s, played a second time in 1978 at the Moers Festival, world famous for its focus on "free jazz" - and thrilled the audience! Blakey was the draw of the festival. And the recording documents the enthusiasm with which the band was celebrated. In Moers, Blakey's band featured several generations: tenor David Schnitter was 28 at the time, pianist Mickey Tucker was 35, Bill Hardman (who had been in Blakey's employ since the late 1950s) was 43, and the bandleader was 56. Three months earlier, the band had recorded the album Backgammon in New York. As on the album, one thing is audible here in Moers: Hardbop in pure culture. This recording shows the band in great playing mood. A document of the times!!! review "How frenetically the veteran was celebrated there, is well heard on the live album. The band, with trumpeter Bill Hardman and saxophonist David Schnitter, was superb and of course the "Blues March" was not to be missed."
