Art Blakey's legendary Jazz Messengers have recorded for a number of major and minor labels over their 35 years of existence. Few periods in the band's history have been as inspiring as the 1962-63 period in Riverside when the Messengers formed a sextet with the incredible Freddie Hubbard/Curtis Fuller/Wayne Shorter front line and the Cedar Walton/Reggie Workman/Blakey rhythm section. This debut from The Messengers on Riverside instantly earned classic status thanks to memorable tracks by Shorter and Hubbard (two of which are featured on the alternate bonus tracks), great ballad contributions from Hubbard and Fuller, and a widely covered arrangement of the title track that shows the leader at his most intense.
