One of the most successful British singer-songwriters in the history of (pop) music will release her first greatest hits retrospective, "The Annie Lennox Collection", on 6 March 2009. The CD features fourteen songs from the last sixteen years, including the biggest hits of her solo career from the albums "Diva" (1995), "Medusa" (1995), "Bare" (2003) and "Songs of Mass Destruction" (2007), as well as two new recordings that are exclusively included on the album. The timeless songs selected for the compilation are the essence of their always distinctive soul, including worldwide hits like "Why," "Walking On Broken Glass" and the Grammy Award-winning "No More 'I Love You's." "It was just about time to release this 'collection' this year," explains Scot. "The songs are just timeless and have evolved into 'classics' in their own way over the years." Annie Lennox is an unsurpassed singer, songwriter and live performer who has expressed her emotions, joys and sorrows in songs that deserve to be called "soul music" in every sense of the word. Annie's music has become the music of millions of lives.
"Annie Lennox Collection" contains two new songs recorded especially for this album. The second new song - and the lead track - is a cover of the Irish alternative band Ash's hit "Shining Light", which won the 2001 Ivor Novello Award for "Best Contemporary Song". A video for "Shining Light" is also worth watching, with the charismatic international star taking on all the musical roles.
In addition to the regular album, "Annie Lennox Collection" will also be released in a limited edition with a bonus CD. It includes the Oscar-winning song "Into The West" (from "Lord of the Rings - Return of the King"), a cover version of Joni Mitchell's "Ladies of the Canyon", "Hush, Hush, Hush", and the Jimmy Cliff classic "Many Rivers to Cross", the traditional "Dream Angus", Björk's "Mama", REM's evergreen "Everybody Hurts" in a duet with Alicia Keys and Annie's rendition of the Cole Porter standard "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye".
Among the many highlights of the "Annie Lennox Collection" is the song "Sing", which references the "SING" campaign that Lennox launched to raise awareness of or call for support for the AIDS/HIV pandemic in Africa. "We're still in the early stages, but I see it as a lifelong mission," Lennox explains. "I'm stepping out of my voice to communicate more fully than I have in the past. I want to help those who don't have the same opportunities as me to be heard."
Recently, Lennox received the Red Cross Award for services to humanity, was named Glamour magazine's 2008 Inspirational Woman of the Year and sang at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday party in London. The musician has used her numerous television appearances, including various talk shows in the US in recent weeks, to draw attention to issues close to her heart apart from music.
Over the course of her 27-year career, whether as a member of the genre- and era-defining band Eurythmics or as a solo artist, Lennox has contributed to the sale of more than 78 million albums. In that time, she has had 34 hit singles, four Grammy Awards, eleven Brit Awards and five Ivor Novello Awards. She is also an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner.
Album spans genres Rock, Pop, Electronic, Pop Rock, Dance-pop and Soft Rock.
