This album, which features a more mature sound than previous recordings, gave rise to a more thoughtful and conceptual approach, which the band further developed on albums such as A Fine Day To Exit and A Natural Disaster. Hailing from the central Liverpool area, Anathema formed as a heavy metal five-piece in the summer of 1990. Originally performing under the name "Pagan Angel", their powerful sound soon formed into a heavy vein of classic doom metal with a huge background of influences. Their debut LP 'Serenades' was completed at Academy and released in February 1993. They received huge critical acclaim and Anathema made it onto the Kerrang! Indie Metal Chart at number two and made it onto Metal Hammer magazine's album of the month. The music video for 'Sweet Tears' received great acclaim on MTV and was also voted album of the month on MTV text. The band's appearance at the MTV Headbangers Ball / Peaceville special showcase with sister labels My Dying Bride and At The Gates was preceded by a major UK tour with several European festivals. 1998 brought the release of the band's best and best selling album to date, "Alternative 4", and further personnel changes at the start and during the supporting tour. Musical disagreements meant the departure of bassist Duncan Patterson. Ironically, he was replaced by Dave Pybus from Duncan's other band Dreambreed. In addition, Martin Powell, the former keyboardist of My Dying Bride, was recruited to join the studio and play keyboards (kscopemusic. com).
