Motown Record Corporation

Parent company of the Motown label, founded in Detroit, Michigan, but relocated entirely to California in 1972. Sometime U.S. distributor of CTI Records, Kudu, Gull, Manticore. Usually abbreviated to Motown Record Corp. on labels; also credited as "Motown Rec. Corp." or "Motown Records Corp.". Succeeded in 1988 by Motown Record Company, L.P. after sale of assets to MCA Records. Previously the parent company of the labels: - Motown - Tamla - Gordy - Soul - V.I.P. - Rare Earth - MoWest - Miracle Records (5) - Black Forum - Morocco Records - Weed (3) - MoJazz - Natural Resources - Melodyland which became Hitsville (2) - Divinity (2) - Workshop Jazz and its international brand Tamla Motown, though all except Motown and MoJazz had been phased out by 1986.
