Lynyrd Skynyrd is an iconic American rock band best known for popularizing the Southern rock genre during the 1970s. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964, the group originally called themselves "My Backyard" before eventually settling on the name Lynyrd Skynyrd, a mock tribute to a strict high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner. The band rose to prominence with their debut album "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)" in 1973, which included hits such as "Simple Man," "Tuesday's Gone," and the enduring anthem "Free Bird." Their follow-up album, "Second Helping," released in 1974, featured what would become their most famous song, "Sweet Home Alabama."
