Emo

Emo is a genre of rock music characterized by an emphasis on emotional expression, sometimes through confessional lyrics. It emerged as a style of post-hardcore from the hardcore punk movement of the mid-1980s in Washington, DC, where it was known as emotional hardcore or emocore, and was pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace (notably the non-UK band of the same name). In the early 1990s, emo was embraced and discovered by alternative/indie rock and pop punk bands like Jawbreaker, Sunny Day Real Estate, Weezer, and Jimmy Eat World. In the mid-90s, bands like Braid, Promise Ring and Get Up Kids emerged from the growing emo scene in the Midwest, and several genre-specific record labels began to specialize.
