Thomas Tomkins

Thomas Tomkins

Welsh Renaissance Composer and Organist

Thomas Tomkins (1572–1656) was a Welsh-born composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. He is considered one of the last members of the English Madrigal School. Tomkins was a pupil of William Byrd and became one of the most important composers of his time, serving as organist at Worcester Cathedral and the Chapel Royal. His career spanned a turbulent period in English history, which included the transition from the Tudor to the Stuart monarchs and the outbreak of the Civil War.
