The George Russell Sextet

The George Russell Sextet

Innovative Jazz Ensemble

The George Russell Sextet was an influential jazz ensemble led by George Russell, an American jazz pianist, composer, and theorist. Born on June 23, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Russell was a key figure in the development of modern jazz. He is perhaps best known for his theoretical work, "The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization," which provided a framework for understanding and improvising jazz that was different from the then-dominant bebop approach. His work influenced many musicians, including Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
