Danish Jazz Saxophonist and Composer

John Tchicai was a prominent figure in the world of avant-garde jazz and free improvisation. Born on April 28, 1936, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a Danish mother and a Congolese father, he was known for his distinctive saxophone playing. Tchicai moved to the United States in the early 1960s, where he became an integral part of the burgeoning free jazz movement. He co-founded the influential New York Contemporary Five and later became a member of the New York Art Quartet.
