Samuel Mareschal

Samuel Mareschal

Samuel Mareschal was born in Tournai in 1554. Being a Protestant refugee, he had to settle in Basel in 1576 and became cathedral organist and professor at the University of Basel in 1577. At that time, Basel became the first Swiss reformed confederation town to integrate music in worship. Samuel Mareschal combines the reformed Psalter with earlier hymns to create works blending Lutheran, Calvinist and even Catholic influences .
