Nicanor Zabaleta

Nicanor Zabaleta

Spanish Harp Virtuoso

Nicanor Zabaleta (1907–1993) was a renowned Spanish harpist known for his virtuosic technique and expressive performances. Born in San Sebastián, Spain, he began studying the harp at a young age and went on to become one of the foremost harpists of the 20th century. Zabaleta's career was marked by his dedication to expanding the harp repertoire, which he did by commissioning new works and by reviving old ones that had been neglected. He performed extensively across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, bringing the sound of the classical harp to international audiences. His discography includes a wide range of recordings that feature both solo harp works and concertos with orchestras. Zabaleta's influence on the world of classical music extends beyond his performances; he also taught many students who went on to have successful careers as harpists. His legacy is preserved in his recordings and in the esteem with which he is held by harpists and classical music enthusiasts around the world.
