Matthias Weckmann

Matthias Weckmann

17th-Century German Baroque Composer and Organist

Matthias Weckmann (c. 1616–1674) was a prominent German composer and organist of the Baroque period. He was a student of Heinrich Schütz and Jacob Praetorius, which placed him in the lineage of the North German organ school, a tradition that would later culminate in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Weckmann's career was primarily centered in Hamburg, where he worked at various churches including the famous St. Jacobi Church, which housed an organ built by the renowned organ builder Arp Schnitger.
