Johann Kuhnau

Johann Kuhnau

Baroque German Composer and Organist

Johann Kuhnau (1660–1722) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist who served as the cantor of the Thomasschule at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, a prestigious position later held by Johann Sebastian Bach. Before Bach's tenure, Kuhnau had already established a significant reputation for his musical contributions. He was not only involved in church music but also composed for the keyboard and wrote secular vocal works. His compositions include sacred music such as cantatas and motets, as well as keyboard music like sonatas and partitas.
