Matthew Locke

Matthew Locke

17th-Century English Composer and Musician

Matthew Locke (c. 1621 – 1677) was an English Baroque composer and music theorist. He was one of the most prominent composers of his time, particularly noted for his music for stage and instrumental works. Locke's career flourished during the Restoration period, following the return of the monarchy in 1660, when King Charles II regained the throne. He composed part of the incidental music for William Davenant's opera "The Siege of Rhodes" (1656) and wrote music for several other plays, including "The Tempest" (1674), which is one of his most famous works.
