Manuel Cardoso

Manuel Cardoso

Portuguese Renaissance Composer and Organist

Manuel Cardoso (1566–1650) was a prominent Portuguese composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He is considered one of the most significant composers in Portugal during his time, alongside contemporaries such as Duarte Lobo and John IV of Portugal. Cardoso was a member of the Carmelite Order and spent much of his life in religious service, which deeply influenced his music. His compositions are noted for their emotional depth and adherence to the polyphonic style of the sixteenth century, even as the Baroque style was becoming more prevalent.
