Lorin Maazel

Renowned American Conductor and Violinist

Lorin Maazel was an American conductor, violinist, and composer who had a distinguished career spanning over five decades. Born on March 6, 1930, in Paris, Maazel was a child prodigy, making his conducting debut at the age of nine. Over the years, he served as the music director of several leading orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna State Opera, and the New York Philharmonic. Maazel was known for his brilliant technique and his ability to draw precise performances from orchestras. He conducted more than 150 orchestras in no fewer than 5,000 opera and concert performances. He made over 300 recordings, including works by a wide array of composers from the classical canon. Maazel's interpretations were often noted for their clarity and attention to detail. He passed away on July 13, 2014, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most respected conductors of his time.
