Maria Callas (2 December 1923 - 16 September 1977) was a Greek-American soprano and one of the most important opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto, wide-ranging vocal and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to bel canto operas by Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini to works by Verdi and Puccini, and early in her career, she also worked on Wagner's music dramas. Her musical and dramatic talents led her to be celebrated with the title La Divina.
