Ljuba Welitsch was a celebrated Bulgarian operatic soprano, renowned for her passionate and dramatic interpretations, particularly in the works of Richard Strauss. Born on July 10, 1913, in Borisovo, Bulgaria, she began her career in the late 1930s after completing her studies in Sofia and Vienna. Welitsch's international breakthrough came with her portrayal of Salome in Strauss's opera of the same name, which became one of her signature roles. Her performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on the opening night of the 1949-1950 season was particularly acclaimed and solidified her reputation as a leading soprano of her time.
