Liuwe Tamminga

Liuwe Tamminga

Renowned Dutch Organist and Early Music Specialist

Liuwe Tamminga (1953-2021) was a distinguished Dutch organist known for his expertise in Italian Renaissance and Baroque music. He served as the principal organist at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, Italy, where he played on historic organs, including those attributed to Lorenzo da Prato and Baldassarre Malamini. Tamminga's career was marked by his dedication to the research and performance of early music, particularly that of composers who worked in Bologna. He recorded extensively, contributing to the rediscovery of lesser-known works from the period. His performances and recordings were celebrated for their authenticity and scholarly approach, as well as for their musicality. Tamminga collaborated with various ensembles and musicians, bringing ancient sounds to contemporary audiences through both live performances and a rich discography that includes works by composers such as Girolamo Frescobaldi and Domenico Gabrielli.
