Karl Weigl

Karl Weigl

Austrian-American Composer and Pianist

Karl Weigl (1881–1949) was an Austrian composer, born in Vienna, who made significant contributions to classical music during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He studied with Alexander Zemlinsky and was a contemporary of composers such as Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg. Weigl's Jewish heritage forced him to flee Austria after the Anschluss in 1938, as the Nazi regime's policies were incompatible with his existence there. He emigrated to the United States, where he continued his career as a composer and educator.
