John Philip Sousa, born on November 6, 1854, was an American composer and conductor known primarily for American military and patriotic marches. As the leader of the United States Marine Band from 1880 to 1892, he earned the nickname "The March King" due to his mastery in the genre. Sousa composed many well-known marches including "The Stars and Stripes Forever," which is the National March of the United States, as well as "Semper Fidelis," which is associated with the U.S. Marine Corps.
