Jean Barraqué

Jean Barraqué

French avant-garde composer

Jean Barraqué was a French composer associated with the post-war avant-garde movement. Born on January 17, 1928, in Puteaux, he studied in Paris with notable teachers including Olivier Messiaen and Jean Langlais. His compositional style was deeply influenced by serialism, a method of composition using series of pitches, rhythms, dynamics, timbres, or other musical elements. Barraqué is best known for his ambitious cycle of works titled "La Mort de Virgile," based on the novel by Hermann Broch.
