Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens

Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens

Belgian Romantic Organist and Composer

Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823–1881) was a Belgian organist and composer, renowned for his contributions to the development of organ music. Born in Zoerle-Parwijs, he studied in Brussels and later in Breslau with Adolph Hesse, which greatly influenced his organ style. Lemmens is particularly famous for his "École d'Orgue," a method for organ playing that focuses on both technical and musical aspects of performance and is still in use today. His compositions include a variety of works for the organ, such as sonatas, preludes, and fugues. He was also a respected teacher; among his notable students was the French organist Alexandre Guilmant. Lemmens' influence extended beyond his own performances and compositions as he played a significant role in the revival of Flemish music in the 19th century and contributed to the development of the symphonic organ style.
