Ion Ivanovici

Ion Ivanovici

Romanian Composer and Military Band Leader

Ion Ivanovici (1845–1902) was a Romanian military band leader and composer, best known for his waltz "Waves of the Danube" ("Donauwellen"). Born in Timișoara, he became one of the most prominent composers of his time in Romania. His career flourished as he composed over 350 dances, but it was "Waves of the Danube" that brought him international acclaim after winning the prize for the best composition at the 1889 Paris Exposition. The piece was later popularized in the United States under the title "The Anniversary Song," especially after being used in movies. Although Ivanovici was a contemporary of the Strauss family, who were famous for their waltzes and other dance music, he did not achieve the same enduring global fame as Johann Strauss II and his relatives. However, his contribution to the genre of romantic waltz music is significant, and his works remain an important part of Eastern European musical heritage.
