Henri-Gustave Casadesus

Henri-Gustave Casadesus

French violist and composer

Henri-Gustave Casadesus (1879–1947) was a French violist, composer, and music publisher. He was part of the Casadesus family, which included several notable musicians. Henri was particularly known for his involvement in the revival of older music styles and instruments. He founded the Société des Instruments Anciens in Paris, which was dedicated to performing works on period instruments. Although Henri-Gustave Casadesus is sometimes associated with compositions attributed to other composers, such as the Handel/Casadesus Viola Concerto in B minor, these works were actually written by his relative, Henri Casadesus (1879–1947), who was known for his "ancient" concertos in the style of various Baroque composers. Henri-Gustave's career as a violist and composer was intertwined with his efforts to promote early music and its performance practices.
