Harald Sæverud

Harald Sæverud

Norwegian Classical Composer and Pianist

Harald Sæverud (1897–1992) was a prominent Norwegian composer known for his contributions to classical music during the 20th century. His work is characterized by a distinctive national style that often incorporates elements of Norwegian folk music, yet he also embraced a broader European tradition. Sæverud composed nine symphonies, numerous piano pieces, chamber music, and works for solo instruments. His Symphony No. 5, often referred to as the "Symphony of War," reflects the turbulent period of World War II and is one of his most recognized compositions. Sæverud's music gained considerable popularity in Norway and has been performed by orchestras around the world. Despite facing some criticism for his individualistic style during his lifetime, he is now celebrated as one of Norway's most important composers, with his works continuing to be an integral part of Norwegian cultural heritage.
