Canadian Composer and Pianist

Galt MacDermot was a Canadian composer, pianist, and writer of musical theatre best known for his work on the hit musical "Hair." Born on December 18, 1928, in Montreal, Quebec, MacDermot received his Bachelor of Music from Cape Town University in South Africa and later studied at the Mannes School of Music in New York. His most famous work, "Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical," which he composed in the late 1960s, was a groundbreaking piece that reflected the counterculture of the time. The musical's integration of rock music into a Broadway framework was innovative and helped to usher in a new era of musical theatre. "Hair" was a massive success and spawned numerous productions around the world as well as a Grammy Award-winning soundtrack album.
