Dean Dixon

Dean Dixon

Pioneering African-American Conductor

Dean Dixon (1915–1976) was an African American conductor who made significant contributions to classical music during the mid-20th century. Born in New York City, Dixon studied at the Juilliard School and Columbia University. He began his career in the United States but faced racial barriers that limited his opportunities. Despite these challenges, he became the first African American to conduct the New York Philharmonic in 1941.
