Clemens non Papa

Clemens non Papa

Renaissance Franco-Flemish Composer

Clemens non Papa, also known as Jacobus Clemens non Papa, was a Netherlandish composer of the Renaissance period. He earned his distinctive moniker "non Papa" to avoid confusion with the poet Jacobus Papa. Active in the first half of the 16th century, Clemens non Papa was a prolific composer, particularly noted for his sacred music compositions. He wrote over 100 settings of the Mass as well as numerous motets and psalm settings. His style is characterized by smooth polyphony and a rich, expressive text setting.
