Sir Alexander Gibson was a renowned Scottish conductor, known for his significant contributions to classical music and his role in raising the profile of the Scottish National Orchestra (now the Royal Scottish National Orchestra). Born on February 11, 1926, in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Gibson studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and later at the Royal College of Music in London. He also spent time studying under Herbert von Karajan in Siena, Italy.
