Adrian Willaert

Adrian Willaert

Renaissance Franco-Flemish Composer and Founder of the Venetian School

Adrian Willaert (c. 1490 – 1562) was a Netherlandish composer of the Renaissance and one of the most influential musicians of his time. He was born in the Low Countries, in what is now Belgium, and received his early musical training there. Willaert moved to Italy in his early career, where he became a central figure in the Venetian School of music. In 1527, he was appointed maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, a prestigious position he held until his death.
