Mozart's famous Clarinet Concerto is usually played on a modern clarinet today, but it was actually composed for the instrument of clarinetist Stadler, which had a wider range in the bass register. This bass clarinet was tuned in A and enjoyed considerable popularity in Mozart's time, when the clarinet had not yet been elevated to a permanent, conventional orchestral instrument. The only logical conclusion to draw from this is that the concerto does not survive in Mozart's manuscript, but only in early 19th-century printed editions for the now common clarinet. However, a review of the first edition of 1802 shows that this work was originally intended for bass clarinet - the reviewer states that he still had Mozart's handwritten score in front of his eyes. This is a recording of a concert at La Fenice on 2 April 2011.
