Nikolaus Harnoncourt, a "master" of historical performance practice, has carried out a project that has long been one of his heart's desires: he has presented the complete Mozart/Da Ponte cycle for the first time with his "original sound orchestra" Concentus Musicus and a personal selection of singers, and reaped the fruits of his Mozartean research - "an enthusiastically received cycle"! (news.at). In an intensive rehearsal and preparation phase, he sought a Mozartian hermeneutic based on historical sources yet anchored in contemporary times, so that he could stage Da Ponte's entire "trilogy" - The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte - in just six weeks. True to his reputation as a provocateur, Harnoncourt once again lives up to his name as a 'Mozartian rebel': 'True to his reputation as a provocateur, Harnoncourt takes up at a rapid pace what we are accustomed to hear slowly, and takes up with vigour what we have come to expect' (Forum Oper).
