Texasan měl smlouvu s Columbia Records již v letech 1975 až 1993, během nichž vydal řadu hitů a úspěšných alb. "Jsem opravdu šťastný, že jsem zpět u Sony Music," říká Willie Nelson. "Jsme partnery už mnoho let, máme za sebou skvělou historii a těším se na další společné roky." Kromě nových písní obsahuje album "Heroes" také několik nově interpretovaných klasických skladeb, včetně coververzí písní z 30. a 40. let minulého století. Kromě samotného Willieho Nelsona přispěli novými skladbami i jeho synové Lukas a Micah, mezi hostujícími hudebníky jsou Merle Haggard, Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson a Sheryl Crow.

Album produkoval Buddy Cannon a nahrávalo se převážně pod dohledem Steva Chadieho v Pedernales Recording Studio v texaském Austinu.
