Behind the compilation "Out Of Addis" are the Ethiopian sound system and label Sheba Sound and the creators of Paradise Bangkok, i.e. British DJ Chris Menist and his Thai colleague Maft Sai. Both are maniacal record collectors, rescuing one forgotten treasure of 60s/70s Southeast Asian pop music after another and bringing it to the people on exclusive compilations through Eastern Connection. While their first two samplers were dedicated to Southeast Asia, "Out Of Addis" focuses on recordings from Ethiopia. When music lovers think of the Horn of Africa, they immediately think of the funky Ethio-jazz that Mulatu Astatke and his ilk brought to the world from Addis Ababa in the 70s. To reduce the Ethiopian music scene to its star, however, would be unfair, given that a variety of sounds can still be heard in Ethiopia today: the country is home to more than 80 ethnic groups, each with its own deeply rooted language and culture. For six years, the creators of "Out Of Addis" traveled the country to record suitable tracks. In the end, 13 pieces were chosen - but that's just the tip of the iceberg. The recordings were mixed and mastered in the UK and given a modern feel that makes them suitable for clubs and dance floors.
