The return of post-punk slowness: the debut from the London quartet, which is doing a brisk business.The xx's sound is as minimalist as their band name. They're somewhere between Mazzy Star, The Cure and My Bloody Valentine, and their sound is as bleak as it is crystal clear, the likes of which hasn't been seen in a long time. The London quartet around singer Roma Madley Croft and guitarist Oliver Sim love darkness, 80s guitar riffs and American R&B. It sounds a bit harsh, but it's one of the reasons for The xx's unique sound, which NME magazine immediately declared the in sound of London. The breathy vocals, almost austere guitars and sparse samples are reminiscent of dark 80s dream pop, yet sound excitingly new. It's clear that "xx" is already a contender for "Debut of the Year 2009".
