While the first festival drew between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors, the second was literally packed. More than 200,000 people came to Byron, Georgia, with some estimates as high as 600,000, more visitors than at Woodstock a year earlier. One of the reasons for the large crowds may have been the festival's headliner: Jimi Hendrix. The album "Electric Church - Atlanta Pop Festival, July 4, 1970" is dedicated to his performance at the 1970 American Independence Day. Hendrix, along with his band, musicians Billy Cox (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums), gave a great live performance, playing classics like "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", "Fire" and a cover version of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower", as well as his legendary version of the Star-Spangled Banner, which was accompanied by a big fireworks display that night. The guitar legend died two months later. A recording of that 16-song set is now out with "Electric Church - Atlanta Pop Festival, July 4, 1970". In addition to the live footage, the concert film is also a comprehensive documentary that explores the concert, the festival culture of the time, and most importantly, Jimi Hendrix. It features comments from a number of notable contemporaries, including Hendrix's bandmates Billy Cox and the late Mitch Mitchell, Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Rich Robinson and many others. In addition to the documentary, which has already aired on American television, it features many previously unseen recordings.
